  • Gattegno- a man of influence in mathematics teaching
Gattegno's approach to teaching mathematics, manipulatives, such as Geoboards which he invented and Cuisenaire Rods which he popularised, are part of a way of systematically developing students’ mathematical thinking through the exploration of clear and tangible problems. He demonstrated this with a group of students in 1961 in Canada. Gattegno has influenced maths education internationally.
  • Problem-based learning. June Maker
The name, REAPS, reflects the real nature of our approach to meaningful teaching and learning, but also includes the literal meaning of the word “reap”, and that is the ultimate goal of this model, for teachers and students to collaboratively engage in harvesting learning experiences and acquiring knowledge and skills through the task of solving problems that are real and significant. • Jerome Bruner - has made a significant contribution to understanding learning
For Bruner, the purpose of education is not to impart knowledge, but instead to facilitate a child's thinking and problem solving skills which can then be transferred to a range of situations. Specifically, education should also develop symbolic thinking in children, but first through active and concrete experiences and pictorial support.
