Morning roll call

When the roll is being called in the mornings, the children place a peg into the Numicon 10 shapes and the extra 2 shape because I have 32 children in my class. We then can ask the question What is the difference to our class number s and those here today?  I keep the tray of the shapes and pegs beside me on the mat to make it easy to pass around or have a monitor fill the holes.  This has given the children a great understanding of maths in use!

School trips or other event

I have my class of 32 shown in Numicon shapes.  As each child brings their return slip or money or whatever the ocassion requires them to bring something, I put a sticker on the hole of the shape.  Then we can all see maths happening in front of our eyes!

Fruit salad

Using egg cartons painted in plastic paint and cut into the 10's pattern, we follow a recipe of how many pieces of each kind of fruit to make a salad.  A great recipe and check system!

Fractions

I have a Year 6 class.  We have been studying fractions of our class size.  We keep a tally of scores from games, clothing, lunch types etc for a statistics study and then using the NUmicon baseboard transfer that information into peg patterns and look for the percentages of each to show difference.
